A broad overview of the topic of homeland security. This course defines terminology and explores the differences and interdependencies of homeland security, homeland defense, and traditional first responder communities. It explores the path and historical context that led to creating Homeland Security Presidential Directives (HSPD) and the impact those directives have had on driving legislation, funding, program establishment, agency reorganizations (including establishment of the Department of Homeland Security) and the overall direction of preparedness efforts at home and abroad. This course also helps participants better define the need and value of homeland security and what their role and contribution might be in making a safer United States and the world.
