Overview
To earn the Associate of Science degree in Hyperbaric Medical Technology, 99 quarter credits are required. Credits must come from the following sources:
- Core Courses (69 quarter credits)
- General Education Courses (30 quarter credits)
The Associate of Science degree in Hyperbaric Medical Technology is designed to prepare students with little or no previous medical training for a meaningful career in hyperbaric medicine. The program provides training in all areas of hyperbarics and diving medicine including scope of practice health field source training, advanced diving medicine, certified hyperbaric technician training, hyperbaric safety director training, wound healing training, medical coding and billing, as well as medical office management.
The curriculum includes a balance of lecture and practical hands-on courses to develop the skills and experience needed in the hyperbaric field, and to include the clinical internship contact hours required by the certifying national board in order to qualify for the certifying examination. Graduates will be qualified to work in both hospital and independent clinical environments and in either multiplace or monoplace chamber facilities.
Requirements
Because of the hyperbaric environment, this program has specific clothing requirements, such as cotton socks and comfortable walking/running shoes. Students are required to wear 100% cotton scrubs with the National Polytechnic logo to some classes, which are available for purchase in the College bookstore.
Equipment: Each student must provide a uniform as specified by the contracting ambulance company. Students may also be required to purchase textbooks, medical bags, and other supplies necessary for the concentration.
At the student's own expense, students may be required to undergo a background check, drug screen, and approval by hospitals, clinics, and ambulance companies prior to participating in ambulance ride-alongs and emergency roomobservations. Students may be required to obtain medical malpractice insurance at a nominal fee during their ambulance ride-alongs, hospital practicums, and internships.
NOTE: Students may be required to obtain medical malpractice insurance at a nominal fee during their ambulance ride-alongs, hospital observations, and internships.
General Education Requirement:
In addition to the core courses required for the Associate of Science degree, the program requires the successful completion of 30 quarter credits in six categories of general education.
