Over the years the National Polytechnic College of Science's Wilmington campus has been used as a shooting location for feature films, children's programming, and commercials. The unique location and equipment offers producers the ability and flexibility to create many different diving related scenes as well as period pieces.
Underwater scenes from the 1995 Hollywood feature film, "Crimson Tide," starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, were shot in the College's 11-foot deep training tank. Camera crews and special effects technicians shot underwater action scenes for the movie at night using special lighting and small underwater charges to create the effect of torpedo explosions. Huell Howser, who has a regular program on PBS stations called "California's Gold," did a program dedicated exclusively to the College and its students. Parts of the movie "G.I. Jane," starring Demi Moore, as well as a
Texaco commercial, and even episodes of the children's program Power Rangers were shot at various locations on campus.
National Polytechnic College of Science and Hollywood are an unlikely, yet likely connection. Only the future will determine what other roles our campus might play on the big screen and for television.
